Gua Sha & Cupping - traditional techniques for modern well being

Gua sha and cupping are traditional techniques that can be used alongside massage to support deeper tension release and improve circulation. They are particularly helpful for areas that feel tight, restricted, or slow to respond to massage alone.

Both techniques are offered as part of a tailored home massage session and are always adapted to your body, comfort level, and needs.

They can be booked as stand alone service or additonal to a massage.

What Is Gua Sha?

Gua sha is a technique that has been used in China for over 2,000 years. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, good health is associated with the smooth flow of qi (energy) through the body. Gua sha is traditionally used to encourage this flow and address areas of stagnation.

During a session, a small, smooth-edged tool is used to apply firm, controlled strokes to the skin in one direction. This may cause temporary skin markings known as petechiae, which are a normal response and usually fade within a few days.

Research suggests that gua sha can help:

  • Improve local blood flow
  • Reduce muscle tension
  • Ease discomfort and stiffness
  • Support the body’s natural healing processes

Many clients also find it calming for the nervous system when used appropriately.

What Is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping uses gentle suction created by specialised cups placed on the skin. This suction helps to lift the tissue, encouraging circulation and releasing deeper layers of tension.

Cupping may be helpful for:

  • Chronic muscle tightness
  • Neck, shoulder, and back tension
  • Desk-related postural strain
  • Areas that feel “stuck” or restricted

Cups can be left in place briefly or gently moved across the skin, depending on what feels most suitable for you.

Temporary marks may appear and are a normal response. These usually fade within a few days.
